The CIWEM Young Members Award recognises the outstanding
contribution to environmental understanding made by a young member
of CIWEM.
Entry Criteria
Entrants must be nominated via a Branch, Group or
employer by completing the nomination form. An
outline CV must also be attached.
Entrants must be:
- a member of CIWEM (any level)
Judging Criteria
Each nomination will be assessed by a panel of judges
including representatives of CIWEM and Jacobs Babtie as well as
independent suitably qualified individuals. In the first instance
judging will be based on the nomination form, according to the
following criteria:
- Why they were nominated
- Work the nominee has carried out outside their normal
remit
- Are they a good CIWEM ambassador
- Projects/Awards won
Shortlisted nominees will then be invited to undertake a
presentation on their chosen topic before the judging panel in
London in early 2012. Teleconference facilities will be
provided for those unable to attend.
The Prize
The Award comprises of a trophy (a silver quaich cup), a framed
certificate, publication of an article in Water and
Environment Magazine and a cash prize of £1000. The
Award will be presented at the CIWEM Annual Dinner in 2012.

Previous Winners/Projects
2011 winner
The winner of CIWEM's Young Members Award 2011 was Laura
Sanderson, a Scientist within Royal Haskoning's Coastal and Rivers
Division, for her proactive role in the Institution and the wider
environmental community.
Over the last four years, Laura has worked on a wide variety of
projects, including: flood risk mapping; flood risk assessment;
flood alleviation scheme appraisal; economic analysis; hydrology
and hydraulic modelling. She is currently on a part-time
secondment to the Environment Agency. Highlights of her career so
far include coordinating the completion of a WFD study in Badsey
Brook, one of the first to be undertaken in the country; deriving
Areas Benefiting from Defences (ABDs) for the entire Norfolk,
Suffolk and Essex coastline; and hosting a seminar on surface water
management for LAs, the EA and Defra which lead to an improved
understanding of the Act.
Laura represents Royal Haskoning on a sustainability committee
chaired by Solihull Council and is the youngest member of a select
group of staff attending Royal Haskoning's Business Development
Programme. Throughout this time, Laura has also demonstrated her
commitment to CIWEM, becoming the Vice Chair of the Midlands Region
New Members Committee and enrolling on the Royal Haskoning CIWEM
structured training scheme.
The Chairman of the CIWEM Rivers and Coastal Group and colleague
of Laura's at Royal Haskoning commented: "Laura's dedication to her
professional training is evidenced by the significant progress she
has made with her CIWEM Structured training programme and the
proactive role she plays in the local and inter-office CIWEM
Candidates' forum. She is a credit to the water and environmental
management industry."
Laura's win of the award was in recognition of her proactive
role in the Institution, and the wider environmental community.
2010
The 2010 winner of CIWEM's Young Member's Award sponsored by
Jacob's is James Glover, 26, a graduate hydrologist, and employee
of Mott MacDonald. The award was gained through his involvement in
Mott McDonald's Water for Schools initiative.
2008
Congratulations to Hannah O'Callaghan from the CIWEM Rivers and
Coastal Group, the winner of the 2008 Young Members Award.
The judges also chose to highly commend Lara Ball from the South
East branch and Richard Williams from the Tyne and Humber
branch.
2006
The 2006 Award was won by Joanna Eyquem of
CIWEM's Metropolitan Branch for her paper entitled 'Using
fluvial geomorphology to inform integrated river basin
management'. Two other entrants were commended this year,
David Speers of the Northern Ireland Branch was commended for
his paper 'Impacts of artificial aeration on dissolved oxygen
deficiency and stratification in impounded estuarine waters' and
Helen Richardson of the Tyne and Humber Branch was commended for
her entry 'Paull Holme Strays Managed Realignment - Making the most
of it!'.
Further Information
Judges appointed by CIWEM will choose the winners. The judges'
decision on all matters relating to the competition is final.
The candidates that are shortlisted and invited to London to
present their paper before the judges can apply to have travel
costs reimbursed.
