Spring Meet and AGM: Managing the wettest drought: lots of water, lots of change
09.00
17.00
Austin Court, Birmingham
Overview
The landscape of flood risk management is changing: the Flood
and Water Management Act (2010) continues to be implemented, giving
local authorities greater responsibilities for flood risk
management and placing a greater emphasis on partnership working
between organisations. Defra funding policy, looking for
local contributions towards flood alleviation schemes enters into
its second year, the organisational structure for environmental
delivery in Wales is changing and legislation relating to the wider
water environment and water industry continues to evolve.
This is against the backdrop of recent flood events: severe
summer storms causing flash flooding, intense and prolonged
rainfall resulting in widescale flooding of our river systems,
including the Severn, Trent and Ouse, coastal flooding, groundwater
flooding and most recently flooding exacerbated by snowmelt
particularly affecting parts of Wales.
This event will give delegates an understanding and appreciation
of the challenges and issues facing Lead Local Flood Authorities
and partnership organisations including District and Borough
Councils, Internal Drainage Boards, Water Companies and the
Environment Agency as responsibilities for local flood risk
management continue to grow and develop.
Objectives
- To provide an opportunity to share experiences in implementing
a flood risk management service: how organisations have made it
happen
- To provide a forum for sharing issues and challenges that have
arisen and how these have been overcome
- To explore the practical approaches that Risk Management
Authorities have taken
- To discuss necessary skills and resources
Competences
This event is relevant to the following competences:
A1. Knowledge of wider environmental issues and trends
A2. Ability to develop strategies or plans to address changes in
your sector
