Conservation and Recreation Panel (CRP)
CIWEM's Conservation and Recreation Panel (CRP) is one of the seven Technical Panels that have been formed to ensure that the Institution is able to fulfil all aspects of its Royal Charter. Panels are the technical backbone of the Institution.
The Panel's terms of reference give it a wide remit within the following areas:
- Land use and management; rural enterprise; development planning
- Amenity land use; the historic environment; protected landscapes; urban parks and open space
- Recreation opportunities; sustainable recreation; management; tourism
- Species and habitats; ecology; geomorphological processes; conservation land management
- Policy instruments, including incentives (charges, levies, taxes, payments), regulatory approachess, and voluntary codes of practice and agreements
- Techniques and Standards, including Environmental Impact Assessment, Strategic Environmental Assessment and Sustainability Appraisal.
- Environmental education (of CIWEM members and the wider public)
The Panel is charged with a number of outputs including events, consultation responses, policy statements, technical advice, representation and publications. The Panel currently meets three times a year at CIWEM's London office, and members are in frequent contact via email.
A number of Panel members produced a diverse range of articles for an Panel special edition of CIWEM's Water and Environment Magazine, published in May 2005. Click here for details of where to order back issues.
The Panel has been involved with conferences on Soils and Landuse and Water Management in recent years. Panel members have also contributed in detail to Policy Position Statements on Soils, Recreational Use of Inland Waters and Parks for People.
Two panel members wrote chapters for CIWEM’s ‘Habitats Guide – Volume 1’, which was published in February 2004. Click here for further details.
One of our panel members also co-authored the new CIWEM and RSPB 'The saltmarsh creation handbook: a project manager's guide to the creation of saltmarsh and intertidal habitat', published in June 2005. More details about this book are available here.
The Panel would welcome your views on these subjects, or any other issues which you think the Panel should consider. Please send your comments to alastair@ciwem.org
